What this solves
For most German long-distance trips (under 800 km), the choice is between FlixBus (the dominant coach operator), BlaBlaCarBus (the rebrand of the former MeinFernbus, now co-branded), BlaBlaCar rideshare (private drivers offering spare seats) and Mitfahrer (the German-local alternative — strong in the East). They look interchangeable but aren't.
The FlixBus-vs-BlaBlaCarBus question is mostly about price — same buses, slightly different app UX. The FlixBus-vs-BlaBlaCar-rideshare question is about what you trade off: 30-50% cheaper per seat vs the driver's right to cancel the morning of, no fixed departure city center, and a strict "1 bag small, 1 bag medium" luggage norm. Mitfahrer is similar to BlaBlaCar but heavier on Berlin-Leipzig/Bunnersberg-Hannover corridors.
This calculator models cost (with realistic luggage penalties), door-to-door time, CO2 per person and flexibility. It also tells you which option is genuinely cheapest for your trip, not just whichever has the lowest sticker price.
How to read the result
- Cost is total for your group of n passengers including all luggage fees and seat reservation costs. Bus base fare ≈ €0.06-€0.10/km, rideshare base fare ≈ €0.03-€0.07/km.
- Time is door-to-door: bus stations are in the city, rideshare pickup points can be anywhere. Add 30-60 minutes for rideshare pickup.
- CO2 is per-passenger, g/km. Bus ~27g p/km; rideshare in a 4-seat car ~50g p/km (so 200g total / 4 pax).
- Luggage penalty appears as a yellow warning when your bags exceed the operator's free allowance.
Limitations
- FlixBus dynamic pricing is modelled as a flat €0.08/km, no London-marginal discounts.
- Does not include station transfer (city bus or S-Bahn from city center to the coach terminal).
- Does not model BlaBlaCar driver's cancellation rate (~15% on most routes).
- Mitfahrer pricing varies heavily by region — strong in East Germany, weak in NRW/Bayern.
- Does not include overnight FlixBus night-routes (sleeper surcharge, less legal grey area).
- Carbon estimates use DEFRA 2025 averages; bus efficiency varies by occupancy.
FAQ
Why is FlixBus so often the same price as BlaBlaCarBus?
Because FlixBus acquired MeinFernbus (now BlaBlaBus) and they coordinate pricing. You usually pick based on schedule, not price.
Can the BlaBlaCar driver cancel last minute?
Yes. BlaBlaCar enforces driver-side cancellation tracking but doesn't compensate passengers for last-minute no-shows. Always have a Plan B (rail or bus) on a rideshare trip.
Is Mitfahrer the same as BlaBlaCar?
Functionally yes. Mitfahrer.de is the older German-local service, stronger on East German and rural routes. BlaBlaCar is international. The cars on Mitfahrer tend to have more "village hop" structure.
Does the D-ticket cover any of these?
No. The D-ticket is regional rail + city transit only. Long-distance coaches and rideshare are excluded. This is exactly the gap this calculator fills.
