Airport transfer 2026 reference · 8 airports

FRA, MUC, BER, DUS, CGN, HAM, STR, HAJ — which gets you to the city fastest per €.

The most expensive mistake at a German airport is the taxi queue. S-Bahn, RE, Flughafen-Express, Lufthansa Express Bus, FlixBus and the taxi itself all compete for the airport-to-city leg. The right one depends on which airport, how many bags and the time of day. This calculator picks the right mode for your trip.

Trip inputs

Each has different mode options and D-ticket coverage.
City centre = direct transit; hotel may favour taxi if no S-Bahn nearby.
Drives taxi break-even point.
Includes carry-on + checked. More than 3 changes the answer.
S-Bahn runs every 20-30 min in the night, sometimes hourly.
Drives which option the calculator highlights as the winner.
D-ticket covers RE/RB/S-Bahn/Tram but NOT Flughafen-Express or Lufthansa Express Bus.

What this solves

The taxi is almost always the worst option for one passenger. A Frankfurt Hbf taxi at the standard €3.80 flag fall + €2.30/km runs roughly €50-€60; the S-Bahn S8/S9 is €5.40 (or €0 if you have D-ticket) and runs every 15 minutes. For solo travellers with light luggage, the taxi is approximately 8x more expensive for the same 25 minutes of journey.

The picture changes when you add bags, passengers, or a deep-night arrival. With 2-3 large suitcases, an S-Bahn without a luggage rack means rolling them up one escalator — at which point the Lufthansa Express Bus (FRA) or FEX (BER) earns its premium. And after the S05 from Hamburg shuts down, taxi is sometimes the only legal option.

The D-ticket turns the airport leg from "the most expensive €8 of my trip" to "free", and the calculator shows you exactly which airports are covered (RE, S-Bahn always; Lufthansa Express Bus never; Flughafen-Express varies by city).

FAQ

Does the D-ticket cover the Lufthansa Express Bus?

No. The D-ticket is regional rail + city transit. Lufthansa Express Bus is an airport-specific product, not regional rail. You need to buy a separate ticket (~€11-€20 depending on route).

How early should I leave for the airport?

For S-Bahn, add 1 hour before security close for short-haul (3 hours before for long-haul). S-Bahn delays happen but rarely exceed 10 min. Allow 2 hours for transfer with luggage.

Is the taxi really 8x the S-Bahn?

Roughly, yes. For FRA-Hbf, the taxi is €50-€60 vs S-Bahn at €5.40 (or free with D-ticket). The S-Bahn is also more reliable in city/airport traffic.

What about Uber?

Uber is regulated in Germany. In Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Frankfurt, you can use FreeNow (the European Uber-equivalent) and Bolt, but they cost roughly the same as a taxi. In smaller cities, they don't operate.
