Decode the dress code
What this solves
Travellers wear the wrong thing at the wrong time: a hoodie at the Hamburg Staatsoper, sneakers at a Michelin-Stelle in München, a Sakko at Berghain. The cost isn't a fine — it's the door. This tool collapses the rule into a single read so you don't have to learn the dress code of 36 venues by trial.
The biggest gap is the Birkenstock-at-fine-dining rule: a Munich *-Sternekoch may politely turn you away. The same shoes are welcome in Berlin's Clubs and at the Wiesn. Same country, opposite verdict.
How to read the result
- "Yes" = standard, expected, no friction.
- "No" = door-rejection likely. Turn back.
- "Risky" = works 80% of the time; depends on the Türsteher mood and on what else you're wearing.
- "Berlin exception" = Berlin nightlife has its own logic. Anti-fashion is part of the culture.
Limitations
- Türsteher decisions are subjective. The Bayreuth Festspielhaus has a strict Türsteher on opening nights.
- Premiere vs Repertoire: an Oper premiere is stricter than a routine Tuesday Repertoire night.
- Berghain is famously impossible to model — black T-shirt, hoodie, no logos. The Türsteher mood rules.
- Does not cover Messe/Tradeshow dress codes (typically business formal).
- The "Birkenstock at fine dining" rule is real but not universal — some Michelin-Stuben welcome them.
FAQ
Why is Bayreuth the strictest Oper in Germany?
The Bayreuth Festspielhaus was built by Ludwig II specifically for Wagner. The Türsteher enforces a Sakko-Pflicht (jacket mandatory) at every premiere. The house dress code is published in the program: Sakko, no sneakers, no shorts. The rule is historical and unchanged since 1876.
What is the Berghain dress code?
There isn't one — by design. Berghain rejects fashion: no logos, no trainers with status, no designer streetwear. The default is black, plain, often with a hoodie. The Türsteher Sven Marquardt uses photography as art, so what looks "anti-fashion" to tourists is his aesthetic.
Are Birkenstock allowed at fine dining?
Mostly no. A Michelin-Stelle in München, Hamburg or Stuttgart will most likely turn you away. A Bavarian Stube with Michelin ambition is stricter than a Berlin Stadtküche. The rule has softened in 2024–2026 but is still a real rejection risk. Closed-toe dark shoes are safer.
What's a Schloss tour dress code?
Schloss tours (Neuschwanstein, Sanssouci, Hohenzollern) have no dress code. Most visitors wear what they wore for sightseeing. Only the Bavarian Staatsgemäldesammlungen (Alte Pinakothek, Residenz) have a "Sakko empfohlen" soft note.
