Your Hütte trip inputs
What this solves
Most first-time Hütte-walkers have three false expectations. One: that you can walk in without a reservation in summer. Two: that a "Hüttenübernachtung" is just a mattress. Three: that DAV membership is optional. None of these is true in 2026.
The Watzmannhaus (1,930 m, near Berchtesgaden) books out in February for August. The Höllentalanger Hütte has no phone — only an online form. The Riemannhaus charges category-A rates for the mattress (members ~€30, non-members ~€45) but dinner is €20–25, so ordering à-la-carte is more expensive than the Halbpension they push on you. This tool gives you the real number — and the date your booking email has to land.
How to read the result
- "Per night (DAV)" is the mattress rate for your membership category. Member rate is roughly €25–35; non-member rate €35–55 depending on the Hütte's category.
- "Halbpension" is dinner (typically 3 courses) + breakfast. €25–35 per person per night. Mandatory at most DAV Hütten when you stay.
- "Trip total" = nights × party × (mattress + Halbpension if yes). Excludes travel to trailhead, gear and summit extras.
- "Book by" is the realistic latest email/online date to secure a confirmed spot. Peak-season Watzmannhaus fills in February; shoulder-season Höllentalanger often takes a same-week call.
- "Tageswanderer rule" tells you whether non-staying walkers can buy lunch or must skip the hut.
Limitations
- Halbpension pricing varies by Hütte (some charge per adult, some per guest, some bundle). The figure is a 2026 average.
- "Tageswanderer" access has tightened every year since 2022 — a few Hütten now refuse day-walkers outright at peak dinner hours to protect residents.
- Alpine club membership reciprocity (DAV → SAC → ÖAV) is honoured but the membership card must be shown at check-in.
- Does not include the AV-Schlüssel (key deposit €10–20) or the Pfand for the Schlafsack linen (€5–10).
- For parties of 6+ a written block booking is required; the calculator does not model that path — call the Hütte directly.
- Some huts have category-B rooms (private) vs category-A (mattress in dorm). Choose "private" as a separate line in the booking form.
FAQ
Can I walk in without a reservation?
In peak summer at Watzmannhaus, Höllentalanger and Riemannhaus — almost never. You will be turned away at the door even if beds are free (the system needs a headcount for dinner and breakfast prep). In shoulder season, the Höllentalanger still takes walk-ins if you call from the valley in the morning.
Is DAV membership worth it for one trip?
Yes, from about 3 Hütte-nights per year. DAV Mitgliedschaft is ~€70/year (with family benefits), the per-night discount is €10–15, and you get the alpine insurance (Bergungskosten) which most travellers should have anyway.
What is a Tageswanderer and can I just eat there?
A Tageswanderer (day-walker) is a non-staying guest. Most DAV Hütten welcome them for drinks and a small menu at lunchtime, but dinner is for residents. Höllentalanger and Riemannhaus now reserve dinner strictly for guests after 17:30 — even hot drinks after 18:00 are pushed back if you aren't a guest.
What gear do I actually need?
Hüttenschlafsack (silk or cotton liner, mandatory everywhere), Hüttenschuhe or sandals (no boots in dorm), small earplugs. A pillow is provided. Sheets usually are not — most huts charge a €5 Linen-Pfand if you do not bring your own.
